There's alot of mud slinging and name calling going around at the moment. Presidential elections tend to bring that out in people, I guess. One thing that is probably supposed to get under my skin but doesn't is the fact that people (mostly other women) are REALLY upset at women like myself that are Governor Romney supporters. I've heard everything from how dumb I am to how I've been brainwashed to how I'm trying to take women back to the 1920's (I love Starbucks, there was no Starbucks in the 1920's so I wouldn't go back there.) The thing is that this is nothing new for me. I've been a stay at home mom for going on 20 years, a mother of 10 children (on earth), a wife, and a daughter of the King. I have no college degree and have earned no real money in my lifetime. To society, in general, I'm already useless, stupid, and oppressed. I long since stopped watching mainstream television but manage to (unfortunately) catch a glimpse of daytime TV shows like The View on occasion while waiting in doctor's offices. Almost every time there is witty banter that involves trash talking women that have children and take care of them at home or who put their husbands and family above their careers. It's plastered on magazine covers in the check out line that the way women look and the jobs they hold down are what attracts a man and keeps a man. My question is - who wants a man that only wants you for how you look or how much money you make? Is that what women tell their daughters now? "Oh honey make sure you marry a man that only cares about how you look and your six figure income." More frightening is what our young men are hearing. That they should only look at how a woman's body looks and make sure that she will make 50% of the income so they don't have to sacrifice ball games and video games for the good of their families. Sorry. I'm not saying women shouldn't work outside the home. I have chosen not to but I don't begrudge a woman if she, for a variety of reasons, decides that it's best for her family. Some of my very dearest friends are moms that work out of the home. What I am saying is that I'm not dumb or lazy or unmotivated because I stay at home and take care of my family. I don't lack drive or vision and I'm not trying to send women back to the 1920's (see my Starbucks comment above). Further, just because Governor Romney doesn't wish to make taxpayers fund contraception for women or abortions
doesn't mean that he's anti woman (I, personally see that as pro woman). It doesn't mean he's trying to "outlaw" contraception (really, people?). It means that he's protecting our religious freedoms, which is what this country was founded on.
I disagree with my friends that choose to vote for President Obama but I don't think they are stupid or weak or ignorant.
I respect their freedom to choose who best supports their moral beliefs just I am doing. I really respect folks that stand up for what they believe in (even if it's different from what I believe in) because it shows character. Wishy washy moral relativistic statements have no place in society and definitely not in the Church!!!
In closing and on a completely different subject I will say that I've been poking around the Internet on the thousands of discussion forums for women trying to conceive a baby. Many, many, many of them are in their late thirties and early forties. Many were on hormonal birth control for at least half of their lives. None of them are glad about that. None of them feel empowered by the fact that they are now unable to conceive a baby by natural means and most of them are shocked that their fertility was a gift that is now seemingly gone. I was one of those women that ran from my fertility but God helped me out (thank goodness) and I have been abundantly blessed (despite our efforts in the early years to reject His plan). So, if there was a time in my life when I didn't have a brain I'd say it was back then. And not now.
