#whywemarch and my journey to pro life

On this day when many of those I know and love are in Washington DC marching to protect the lives of those who can’t defend themselves from conception to natural death I just wanted to share some of my experiences as I remember them in regards to life issues.  I am so grateful that the Lord opened my eyes to the truth.

When I was a junior in high school I wrote a paper about why Roe vs Wade should be legal.
I’m not sure I even knew what Roe vs Wade was much less why I thought it should be legal.
I wish there were google docs back then so I could go back and read what 16 year old me said.
I don’t know what grade I got.  I do remember believing that Roe vs Wade empowered women.
The culture is strong and even without social media saturating my mind I really believed women
should have this “choice”.  Ironically when I found out I was pregnant at age 17 and a senior in high school abortion never even crossed my mind.  Not even once. This is why I’m certain I had no clue what RvW was.

When I was in college and not yet married an acquaintance invited me to coffee.  She
had recently found out that she was pregnant.  Her fiance, who already had two children, wanted her to have an abortion.  She didn’t want to. I listened and shared my experience but offered little in the way of encouragement either way or resources.  I still didn’t know. I had never even heard of planned parenthood. It’s hard to believe, I know, I lived under a rock. I didn’t even know what abortion was, really.  I don’t know what my friend decided to do. I don’t think I ever saw her again. No matter
what she chose to do I failed her.  May God forgive me for that. The important part of this story to me is that her fiance wanted her to have an abortion, he was pressuring her, SHE DID NOT WANT TO DO IT!  To me that isn’t a choice.  That’s coercion. I think more women than we know are coerced in the name of choice.

One of the first times I met Jesse (we weren’t dating yet) we were at a restaurant across from a
Planned Parenthood.  He knew what it was. I still did not.  We discussed it and he said very
emphatically that he was pro choice and nothing I could ever say would change his mind.  Then
he said we couldn’t discuss it anymore.  I don’t really think we did discuss it. Again I was drowning in a sea of oblivion.  Maybe on purpose, I don’t even know. We married a year or so after that and sometime later I learned more about what being pro life really meant.  He was correct, nothing that I could ever say would change his mind.  But something did.  That’s his story, not mine, but today he is attending his second (or third?) March for Life with two
of our boys.  He has 14 children on earth and 15 in Heaven.  The journey has been rocky and hard and scary at times but I couldn’t be more proud of the man he has allowed God to form him into.

If you’re in an at risk pregnancy their are so many resources available to you.  It is a lie that pro life people are pro baby but forget the woman. If that has been your experience I’m very sorry.  One amazing resource who recently walked a friend through a difficult pregnancy is
https://sistersoflife.org/  They can also help you find local resources.  I can help you find local
resources, pray for you, and support you however I can.  https://www.silentnomoreawareness.org/ offers healing for post abortive mothers, fathers, and other family members in a loving way that is non shaming and non judgmental.

This Bible verse is especially meaningful for me and my relationship with Jesse.  Seeing his heart change was truly miraculous.

“This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.” Deutoronomy 30:19
